Irmo Okra Strut
The Lake Murray - Irmo Woman's Club established the first Irmo Okra Strut in 1974, with all funds raised being used to build Irmo's first library, where we continue to meet every month!
In 1976, a mobile library unit was opened, and as we continued to raise funds, our dream of Irmo's new library was finally realized with the opening of our current location at 6251 St Andrews Road, Columbia, SC 29212, in 1980.
Today, the Irmo Okra Strut has grown into a nationally recognized two-day festival with thousands of visitors every year, the last weekend in September.
The Lake Murray - Irmo Woman's Club continues our tradition every year at the Irmo Okra Strut, being the sole vendor for that famous southern delicacy - fried okra! We man (or "woman"!) our booth all weekend, cooking up fresh okra right on the spot. Then we allocate monies from our profit to fund scholarships for qualified students at Irmo High School and Dutch Fork High Schools! We also allocate monies from our Okra Strut profit to the Irmo Branch Library as well.
